Try a plunger first. Genuinely, most single-fixture clogs respond to one within a minute or two, and there is nothing to lose by attempting it before you call anyone.
Push down slowly to seal the bowl, then pump with more force upward than down. Watch the bowl rather than the clock.
Three or four solid attempts either work or they don't. Beyond that, forcing it usually just shifts the blockage further along the pipe rather than clearing it, and can crack an older pan in the process.
Our own view on what causes most of these jobs is simple: it is almost never toilet paper. It is "flushable" wipes, sanitary items, cotton buds and nappies, none of which soften in water the way paper does, and every one of them snags on the tiniest rough edge inside an older pipe.
